Words Of Her Seeing

30 APRIL 2019 TO 26 MAY 2019 | EXHIBITION

The definition of what constitutes art has been time and again critiqued from various positions throughout history. Starting from the invention of perspective to the development of photography to the contemporary technologies of surveillance, the gaze of power has remained consistently innovative in directing our channels and routes of imagination.
The idea that seeing comes before reading though holds good in almost all cases, can also be extended to what we see as a visual. However though there have been many artists around the world who use texts for its visual and equally aesthetic appeal, the Indian context becomes very significant because the ‘word’ was always attempted to be appropriated/ usurped by the brahmin heterosexual male, as his domain all through the history.

This exhibition, therefore, tries to bring together works by women artists who have used text itself as their visual element and metaphor.
