Kadubai Kharat, also known as Bhim Kanya, is a Dalit folk artist who lives in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. She sings songs of anti-caste history in various Dalit localities in Aurangabad and runs a family alongside. In her videos, which are a social media sensation, she sings Bhim geet – songs that celebrate the life and times of Babasaheb Ambedkar, Annabhau Sathe, Shahu Maharaj and other anti-caste activists of that era.
Omey Anand, Director of the film Kadubai, is a student at the School of Media and Cultural Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai and founder of Nijaat collective that works towards the anti-caste movement through art forms. He is associated with the Dalit progressive Ambedkarite social movement In Maharashtra and interested in making documentary films on the lives of the Dalit community. Last year, he had made a documentary film, titled – Gajaaadachya Kavita ( poems behind the prison ) and short films Pauses, Enlighten and Terawa (The thirteenth day).
As part of the exhibition Ambedkarite Shahirs from Maharashtra, the Conflictorium screened the trailer of the documentary Kadubai followed by a discussion.
