Evan Hastings is the founder-director of Shadow Liberation. Evan is a US-born artist with a passion for turning pain into medicine through theatre. His work illuminates the intersection of Drama Therapy and Theatre of the Oppressed, creating performative engagements that raise urgent issues in aesthetic dialogue.
Shadow Liberation is a participatory theatre initiative facilitating dialogue about oppression, patriarchy and violence with the aim of sexual assault prevention and social change. Utilizing trauma-informed and research-based practice, Shadow Liberation blends Drama Therapy and Theatre of the Oppressed with Shadow techniques. Shadow Theatre offers distancing strategies conducive to representing traumatic material in abstracted ways.
In this talk, Evan introduced Shadow Liberation and shared stories of conflict and social change from the last decade of his work in India and abroad.
